Le jeune skieur Neal Valiton nous a laissé suite à un accident à l'épreuve finale de la Coupe du Monde qui se déroulait à Tignes… à l'âge de 18 ans, en se consacrant à ce qu'il aimait le plus.

La première étape est terminée ! Comment tu t’en es sorti ?
Je suis plus que content ! En fait, je ne peux pas être plus content que ça ! Avant la compétition, j’ai beaucoup douté de moi et de comment j’allais skier entre les meilleurs du monde. J’avais très peur de donner le meilleur de moi-même et de n’arriver à rien du tout et faire de mauvais résultats ! Mais ça ne s’est pas passé comme ça !
Le premier jour, mon but était de terminer dans les 30 premiers pour aller en finale. J’ai fini 20ème. Le jour de la première finale, j’étais beaucoup plus détendu. Mais j’avais encore un peu peur de mal faire. J’ai eu un tout petit problème avec un arbre qui, juste avant ma dernière cliff, m’a complètement arrêté. Ce qui m’a fait perdre un peu en fluidité mais ça ne m’a pas empêché d’accéder à la super finale !
En super finale, j’avais plus du tout de pression. Et bizarrement, c’est le jour ou j’ai le mieux skié ! J’ai pris beaucoup de plaisir à faire cette dernière descente. Parce que, c’était la dernière de la première étape, j’avais atteint le top 20 et je concourrais pour le 2007 young gun award !
J’ai encore mieux fini la journée vu que j’ai terminé 14ème au classement général, ce qui m’a permis d’avoir 2 points au classement du world tour 2007.
J’ai aussi reçu le prix du young gun ! J’espère cartonner à Kirkwood pour recevoir encore une fois ce prix pour avoir peut-être la chance d’être choisi par The north face comme le nouveau talent du freeride!
The First Stage is Complete! How do you feel?
I am more than content! In fact, I could not be more content than this! Before the competition, I greatly doubted myself and how I was going to ski amongst the best of the world. I was very afraid that I would give my best and arrive at nothing at all and to generate bad results! But it didn’t happen like that! The first day, my goal was to finish in the first 30 to go to the final. I finished 20th. The day of the first final, I was much more relaxed. But I was still a little afraid to do poorly. I had a very small problem with a tree which, right before my last cliff, completely stopped me. That made me lose a little in fluidity but it did not prevent me from reaching the super final! In the super final, I had even more pressure. And oddly, it is the day that I skied best! I took great pleasure to make this last descent. Because, it was the last of the first stage, I had reached the top 20 and I would contend for the 2007 Young gun award! I finished the day still better considering that I finished 14th with the general classification, which enabled me to have 2 points the classification of the world tour 2007. I also received the Young Gun prize! I hope to continue in Kirkwood and receive this prize again to perhaps be chosen by North Face as the upcoming freeride talent!

Et comment ça s’est passé ?
Au départ, je connaissais pratiquement aucun rider et petit à petit on discute de son run ou de sa forme physique avec un rider ou un autre et c’est comme ça qu’on fait de plus en plus de connaissances… D’ailleurs, c’est un de ces moments qui m’a le plus marqué de cette première étape, c’est quand je discutais de ma ligne de super finale avec Aurélien Ducroz et Olivier Meynet ! Ou encore, quand je demandais à Guerlain Chicherit comment allait son dos !
C’était aussi marrant de passer du stade de simple jeune freerider de Verbier à celui de recevoir des compliments de ton run de la part des meilleurs freerider du moment !
Il y a aussi quelque chose qui m’a beaucoup aidé à me sentir bien et à bien skier dès que je suis arrivé, c’était d’avoir été très bien accueilli par Nick Greener (le vainqueur l’année passée). Il m’a invité chez lui, m’a tout de suite montré les faces que je devais descendre, les lignes qui ont été bien notée l’année passée et il m’a surtout encouragé tout du long à bien faire même lorsqu’il est tombé lors de la finale !
Pour l’instant, je vis vraiment une expérience incroyable, je rencontre des personnes exceptionnelles et j’ai beaucoup de chance ! J’espère que ça va continuer comme ça et que je pourrais aussi bien faire à Kirkwood qu’ici !

Points accumulated throughout the season will crown one lucky under-21-year-old a full sponsorship from The North Face and the honor of becoming the next Young Gun winner. This stop’s winner was 18-year-old Neal Valiton of Verbier, Switzerland who finished 14th overall.
And how did it happen?
At the beginning, I practically knew none of the riders and gradually one discusses one’s run or the physical layout with one to rider or another and it is like that that one gets to know the others more and more... Moreover, it is one of these moments which marked me the most marked the first stage, it is when I discussed my line of super finale with Aurélien Ducroz and Olivier Meynet! Or, when I asked Guerlain Chicherit how his back was! It was also funny to pass from the stage of simple young person freerider of Verbier to that to receive compliments of his run on behalf of best the freerider of the moment! It is also something which helped me much to feel me well and to ski well as soon as I arrived, it was to be very well accomodated by Nick Greener (the winner the last year). He invited me at his place, immediately showed me the faces which I was to descend, the lines which were notable last year and he me especially encouraged all along to do well even when he fell at the time of the finale! For the moment, I live really an incredible experience, I meet exceptional people and I have great opportunity! I hope that that will continue like that and that I can do as well in Kirkwood as here!

Comment te sens tu un jour avant ton départ ?
Plutôt bien, je me suis bien préparé. J'ai aussi reçu beaucoup de mail de soutien de mes amis et de bon riders. ça compte énormément pour partir en confiance.
Comme à mon habitude, je suis allé faire un tour du coté de chez Yannick Haddouche un ami de longue date qui me conseille chaque fois que je suis un peu anxieux avant une compétitions ou encore lorsque j'ai des problèmes.
Et comme toujours, il m'a ouvert les yeux sur les 2 compétitions auxquelles je vais participer. J'ai tiré de cette discutions beaucoup de chose essentielles pour me permettre de partir et de skier comme si j‚étais chez moi.
La première chose est que je suis déjà entrain de réaliser mon rêve, je skie toute l'année ! Tout ce qui viens en plus nŒest que du bonus, que ce soit une bonne place aux championnats du monde ou encore des parutions dans certains journaux !
La deuxième chose sur laquelle je vais devoir beaucoup me concentrer durant ces quelques runs c'est la façon dont je vais prendre la chose... C'est à dire, je sais que cette année serait parfaite pour atteindre le plus haut niveau et faire parti de l'élite des skieurs.
Et c'est pour ça que, pour y arriver, je vais devoir envoyer du gros sel sur ces quelques descentes.
Mais Yannick m'a rappelé quelque chose de très important. Je vais devoir faire très attention à la ligne que je vais choisir! Si je me sens pas en forme ce jour là, je dois m‚obliger à choisir un run sur lequel j‚aurais plus de facilité à descendre. Ce sera peut-être un run moins impressionnant mais je le maîtriserai et je ne risquerai pas de tomber.
Il m‚a aussi rappeler qu‚il n‚y a pas que les barres de 20 mètres et les accès difficiles qui font gagner des points. C‚est aussi montrer une ligne différente, la façon dont ont descend et le style qui comptent !
How do you feel one day before your departure?
Rather well, I prepared well. I also received a lot of mail of support from my friends and good riders. That helps me enormously to leave in confidence. As is usual for me, I went to make to a visit to the side of Yannick Haddouche, a friend from a long time, who advises me each time I am a little anxious before competitions or when I have problems. And like always, it opened the eyes to me on the 2 competitions in which I will take part. I drew from this discussion many of the essential things to allow me to leave and ski as if I were at home. The first thing is that I am already on the way to carrying out my dream: I ski all the year! Everything more than that is bonus, although it is a good to achieve a good ranking in the world championships or publications in certain newspapers! The second thing I will have to concentrate myself on during these some runs it is the way in which I will take the task... that is, I know that this year would be perfect if I reach the highest level and to join the party of the elite of the skiers. And to attain that, to arrive there, I will have to produce the big salt on these few descents. But Yannick pointed out something of very important to me. I will have to pay great attention to the line which I will choose! If I do not feel up to form on a day of it there, I must oblige myself to choose a run on which I feel greater facility to go down. It will be perhaps a less impressive run but I will control it and I will not be likely to fall. It also stands out that it is not the cliffs of 20 meters and the difficult accesses which win points. It is also to show a different line, the fashion in which you decend and the style which count!

J'ai commencé à skier à l'âge de 4 ans aux Mayens de Riddes avec mes grands-parents, mon père et mes oncles. J'ai déménagé il y à 10 ans à Verbier ou j'ai transformé cette station en un terrain de jeux tout d'abord en snowboardant et par la suite, vers l'âge de 14 ans, en skiant. De 14 à 16 ans je passais la plus part de mon temps au snowpark et c'est il y a environ 2 ans que j'ai compris que ce qui me plaisait le plus était d'aller à mac 12 dans des couloirs en enchaînant des cliffs plus hautes les une que les autres.
L'année passée, Yannik Odiet un ami, m'a emmené faire des compétitions, on a commencé tranquille avec les 24h de Verbier que l'ont a gagné. J'ai tout de suite pris goût à la compétition c'est pour ça que j'ai décidé de faire la free-session de Morgins, que j'ai aussi gagnée. C'est à ce moment là, en battant des tout bon skieurs, que j'ai compris que freerider était devenu pour moi plus qu'un rêve et plus qu'une passion...
How would you describe yourself?
I started to ski when I was four years old in Mayens de Riddes with my grandparents, my father and my uncles. I moved from there when I was 10 to Verbier … or to put it another way, we transformed the resort into our playground - first of all with snowboards and thereafter, at around 14, with skiing. When I was 14 to 16 years old I spent more the share of my time to the snowpark. It was the last couple of years that I came to understand that what I enjoyed the most was to go mach 12 in couloirs by connecting the highest cliffs, one to another.
Last year Yannik Odiet, a friend, took me along to do competitions, we started quietly with the Verbier 24-Hour Ride and we won it. I immediately got the taste for competition and because of that I decided to do the Free Session of Morgins - and I also won. It is at this time there, by beating some very good skiers, that I truly understood that freerider had become for me more than just a dream and more than just a passion...

C'est une question très vaste car je pourrais aussi bien parler des personnes qui m’ont appris à skier comme mes grands-parents ou encore mon père. A ceux qui mon appris a freerider correctement comme mon oncle Christian et aussi un ami très proche Yannik Odiet. Bien sûr sans oublier le côté technique et financier qui jusqu’à l’année passée venait de la part de mon père et qui cette année vient de la part de mes sponsors : Faction, Pelichet, Mover et Ski Service. Ce sont ces sponsors là qui m’aident à partir aux États-Unis faire les 2 étapes du World Tour 2007.
